Jake Matthews Atlanta Falcons Contract Extension

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement with left tackle Jake Matthews for a two-year contract extension worth $45 million, as confirmed by multiple sources, including NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. This deal, which guarantees Matthews $38 million, will keep the veteran offensive lineman in Atlanta through at least the 2026 season.

Matthews, drafted sixth overall by the Falcons in 2014, has been a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line across his 11-year career. The extension was finalized just ahead of the official commencement of the 2025 league year, where the Falcons were reported to be over the salary cap. The new deal is expected to provide critical cap relief, as Matthews’ earlier contract had a cap number close to $22 million for the upcoming season.

“It’s great to see Jake continuing with us. He’s been a consistent protector on our offensive line and plays a pivotal role in our success,” Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith said. “His leadership and experience are invaluable to our younger players.”

Prior to this extension, Matthews had two years remaining on his contract and was set to enter free agency in 2027. Meanwhile, this extension effectively pushes that potential year back to 2029, aligning with the conclusion of his 15th NFL season.

Matthews holds the remarkable record for the most consecutive starts in franchise history, surpassing former quarterback Matt Ryan‘s benchmark of 154 in a victory against the New Orleans Saints on November 26, 2023. Since being drafted, Matthews has started 179 of a possible 180 games, missing only one game during his rookie season due to injury.

During his tenure, Matthews has been recognized for his performance, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2018. As the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, he has continued a family legacy in professional football, while also being related to NFL players Clay Matthews III and his brothers, Kevin and Mike Matthews.

Matthews’ impact on the team extends beyond just his on-field performance; his durability and skill have established him among the top left tackles in the NFL. “Jake has consistently shown he can perform at a high level, both in run blocking and pass protection,” an anonymous NFL scout commented. “His ability to protect the quarterback and open lanes can’t be understated.”

With this contract restructuring, the Falcons are expected to create more room in their salary cap as they prepare for free agency. Reports indicate the team gained over $7 million in relief through the new deal. “We needed to address our cap situation, and this was a necessary step,” said Falcons General Manager Terry Fontenot. “Jake is a critical piece moving forward, and it’s reassuring to know he’ll be part of our plans.”

The team is anticipated to make additional moves to ensure they remain compliant with the salary cap ahead of the start of free agency on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. As the Falcons navigate this offseason, securing Matthews is viewed as a strategic and essential decision for the franchise’s future.
