Faroe Islands vs. Armenia: Nations League Preview
The Faroe Islands are set to host Armenia in a Nations League match at Torsvollur on Thursday at 7.45 pm UK time. In the group standings, the Faroe Islands have secured one point from two games and are currently at the bottom of their four-team group. Conversely, Armenia stands second, having garnered three points, despite losing 2-0 to North Macedonia in their most recent match on September 10.
The Faroe Islands’ last match ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Latvia, despite managing to create three notable scoring opportunities compared to Latvia’s two. Earlier in the tournament, they had secured a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia on September 7, marking their third draw in five Nations League matches.
In the previous 2022-23 Nations League season, the Faroe Islands had finished third in their group with eight points from six matches, trailing five points behind group winners Turkey. Under the management of Haakan Ericson, the team’s current form is concerning, with only one win, two draws, and 12 losses in their last 15 fixtures, a period where they have failed to score in 11 instances.
Armenia, managed by Oleksandr Petrakov, face their next challenger after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of North Macedonia, even after North Macedonia played nearly an entire half a man down following a red card before halftime. Since Petrakov took over in January 2023, Armenia has had mixed fortunes, with their recent performance showing two wins from the last three games, including a 4-1 triumph over Latvia.
However, Armenia’s track record in away matches has been poor, with no wins in the last six on-the-road fixtures. Historically, they have lost 14 times from their last 20 away games, highlighting their struggles outside of home turf.
With a potential lineup including Bardur a Reynatroed in goal for the Faroe Islands, supported by defenders such as Odmar Faeroe and Viljormur Davidsen, the team looks to amend their record in this crucial home game. Meanwhile, Armenia is likely to start with Ognjen Cancarevic as their goalkeeper, with central defense marshaled by Varazdat Haroyan and others.
