FCS Playoffs: Teams Secure Spots and Bubble Teams Await Selection Show
The 2024 FCS football playoff field is taking shape as several teams have secured their spots through automatic qualifying bids and impressive regular season performances. Drake University‘s football team has earned their second consecutive automatic berth and appearance in the FCS playoffs by winning the Pioneer Football League (PFL) title. The Bulldogs dominated Stetson 49-10, marking their second straight and fifth all-time outright PFL championship.
Lehigh University also secured an automatic berth by sharing the Patriot League Football title with Holy Cross. Lehigh’s Mountain Hawks defeated Lafayette 38-14, with first-year quarterback Hayden Johnson leading the team to victory. This win clinched Lehigh’s 13th Patriot League crown and the league’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.
In addition to these automatic qualifiers, several teams are in strong positions to receive at-large bids. New Hampshire, with an 8-4 record and wins over fellow bubble teams, is expected to be included. Rhode Island, as the co-CAA champion, and South Dakota, after beating the No. 1 team in the FCS, are also likely to make the cut. Other teams such as Tarleton State, UC Davis, and Villanova are anticipated to receive at-large bids due to their strong records and notable wins.
The bubble is tight, with only four spots remaining for teams like Eastern Kentucky, Northern Arizona, Western Carolina, and ETSU. However, these teams face challenges due to losses and the strength of their schedules. Eastern Kentucky’s loss to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona’s lack of wins against teams with winning records may hinder their chances. Western Carolina and ETSU, both with four FCS losses, are unlikely to be selected.
The full FCS playoff field will be announced on Sunday, November 24, during the selection show airing on ESPNU. This will determine the seeding and matchups for the upcoming playoffs.
