Fernando Gago Boca Juniors Debut

Fernando Gago will commence his tenure as the head coach of Boca Juniors with his favored 4-3-3 formation. The match against Tigre is scheduled to take place at 19.15 hours on Saturday in Victoria, following Sergio Romero‘s return to the starting position as goalkeeper after a suspension.

This moment is particularly significant for Gago, who has shown his influence early on at the Ezeiza training facility. Gago’s training sessions have been described as more intense and dynamic, in alignment with the offensive playstyle he wishes to instill in the team. The new coach is set to debut with a tactical shift that moves Boca’s formation into a 4-3-3.

Throughout his coaching career, from Aldosivi to Chivas de Guadalajara, Gago has consistently adhered to his tactical framework rather than adapting to the available players. This approach continues at Boca Juniors, where Miguel Merentiel and Brian Aguirre will be repositioned to support Edinson Cavani as the central forward. The midfield will also see changes, with Ignacio Miramón earmarked for the central midfielder role, flanked by Cristian Medina and Kevin Zenón. Agustín Martegani will find himself on the bench as a result of these changes.

The return of Sergio Romero to the starting eleven marks another notable shift. Romero was sidelined following an altercation with Boca supporters post a high-profile match against River. Gago’s arrival has ushered in a new start for the team, leading to Romero’s reinstatement as goalkeeper despite the tension with the fans. To reconcile past grievances, Romero issued a public apology through the club’s official platform.

The lineup presents some uncertainty, particularly regarding Luis Advíncula‘s participation due to a recurring Achilles tendon issue. However, after a successful 70-minute stint against Brazil, Advíncula will start. Gago has also sought and received permission from the club’s Football Council to utilize Guillermo Fernández, previously sidelined, in the final matches of his current contract expiring in December.

Despite maintaining discretion over his selection during the week, Gago revealed the starting eleven prior to the match at José Dellagiovanna Stadium. The confirmed lineup includes Sergio Romero; Luis Advíncula, Aaron Anselmino, Marcos Rojo, Lautaro Blanco; Cristian Medina, Ignacio Miramón, Kevin Zenón; Miguel Merentiel, Edinson Cavani, and Brian Aguirre.
