Ferrari Unveils Hybrid-Powered F80 Hypercar
As Ferrari marks its 80th anniversary, the revered automaker has redefined its approach to high-performance vehicles with the introduction of the F80 hypercar, slated for release in 2027. This innovative automobile transitions from the traditional V12 engine to a twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain, complemented by a trio of electric motors. This announcement was made on October 17, 2024, as part of Ferrari’s ongoing pursuit of cutting-edge automotive technology.
The Ferrari F80, which will carry a price tag of £3.1 million, boasts a total of 1,183 horsepower. Of this, 888 bhp is produced by the modified 3.0-liter V6 engine, with the remaining 295 bhp supplied by three electric motors. This makes the F80 the most powerful road car ever manufactured by Ferrari. These motors include two on the front axle for all-wheel drive and a third that doubles as an energy generator for the 800V battery system, positioned behind the seats for optimal weight distribution.
Enrico Galliera, Ferrari’s chief marketing officer, emphasized the brand’s commitment to creating cars that provide exceptional performance both on regular roads and racetracks. “Our philosophy is that even the most extreme and special cars have to be experienced beyond the race track, and not be kept in the garage,” Mr. Galliera commented, highlighting the balance Ferrari seeks between innovation and usability.
Further enhancing its performance, the F80 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.15 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. It has also set a new benchmark, completing a lap on the Fiorano circuit in just 1 minute and 15.3 seconds, outperforming its predecessors, the LaFerrari by 4.4 seconds. This was made possible by the hybrid’s sophisticated aerodynamics, delivering significant downforce at high speeds.
Gianmaria Fulgenzi, Ferrari’s chief product development officer, assured that while the car employs a V6 engine, it retains the signature Ferrari sound. “You might doubt me, given it’s a V6 not a V12, but trust me the iconic Ferrari soundtrack remains,” he stated. The vehicle is equipped with Ferrari’s advanced Side Slip Control 9.0 software, which allows drivers to make controlled and confident maneuvers.
Designed by Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari’s chief design officer, the F80’s aesthetics are driven by aerodynamic efficiency rather than traditional visual appeal. It features active aerodynamics, such as an adjustable rear wing and a sophisticated underbody design which contribute to 1,050kg of downforce at 155 mph.
The F80’s chassis is lightweight, asymmetric in design to keep the profile narrow while allowing for a competitive driving position. The interior boasts a 1+1 seating layout, further emphasizing the vehicle’s focus on the driver. Notably, the F80 features cutting-edge technologies, including a hybrid system reduced in weight and size while increasing performance capabilities.
