Fiji National Football Team In Victory Celebration

AUCKLAND, New ZealandFiji‘s men’s national football team claimed a narrow victory over Eastern Suburbs in their second tour game on March 9, 2025, winning 1-0 at Madills Farm. The decisive moment came late in the match when midfielder Setareki Hughes capitalized on a loose ball, sending a powerful shot into the top corner of the net in the 83rd minute.

Fiji, currently touring New Zealand as part of their preparation for the FIFA Men’s World Cup Oceanic qualifiers, also defeated Auckland United 3-0 in their opening match on March 5. This latest win brings them one step closer to fine-tuning their skills ahead of an important qualifier against New Zealand on March 21.

“We are using these matches to get ready for the qualifiers,” Hughes said after the match. “Every opportunity to play gives us a chance to improve as a team.”

The match against Eastern Suburbs was more than just a warm-up; it exemplified the commitment of the Fijian squad to build momentum. Coach criteria emphasized the importance of gaining match experience against club sides, which serve as valuable preparations for higher-stakes competitions.

The Fiji squad will take on a Wellington Phoenix selection on March 15 before facing New Zealand in the qualifiers at Sky Stadium, Wellington. In the semifinals set for March 21, Fiji will aim for a victory to advance in the tournament.

In addition to the current victories, Fiji’s recent form demonstrates confidence and strategic growth. In their opener against Auckland United, they relied on early goals from Christopher Wasasala and Thomas Dunn to dictate play.

“Each game is an opportunity to learn and adapt our strategies,” Hughes said. “The team feels united and believes we can achieve our goals.”

As the date for their critical qualifier approaches, Fiji stands poised to make a significant impact in the OFC qualifiers, which could open the door for participation in the World Cup.

For the players, every match counts as they aim to represent their country on a global stage.

Looking ahead, the team is focused on maintaining their winning trajectory. “We need to keep building, and each game will shape us into a stronger unit,” said coach Gary Faulkner.
