Fiji Rugby Star Waisea Nayacalevu Announces Retirement

Suva, Fiji – Waisea Nayacalevu has announced his retirement from Test rugby, seven months after his last game for Fiji. The experienced player captained the team during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and played his final match in November 2024 against Ireland in Dublin, marking his 40th cap.
The 34-year-old Nayacalevu shared the news on Instagram, reflecting on his decade-long career representing Fiji. He stated, “Today is a day of both celebration and reflection – a day I never imagined would come so quickly when I first wore the white jersey of Fiji back in 2012.”
He continued, “After more than a decade representing my country, my family and myself on the rugby field, I stand before you to announce my retirement from international rugby. This is not an easy decision because rugby has been more than just a game to me.”
Nayacalevu acknowledged the influence rugby has had in his life, saying it provided him with unforgettable experiences and lifelong friendships. He expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and family, recognizing their continual support and dedication throughout his journey.
“To my teammates past and present, thank you. You have become my brothers. We have shared sweat, pain, joy, and glory together,” he said. “To my family, your sacrifices have been the backbone of my journey. You carried me when I was tired and lifted me when I fell.”
Nayacalevu also thanked the people of Fiji for their unwavering support, noting, “I felt your pride every time I stepped onto the field.” He emphasized that although he is stepping away from playing, he plans to continue contributing to the sport, particularly through mentoring and supporting grassroots programs.
“I retire with no regrets, only gratitude for every try scored, every challenge faced, and every anthem sung,” he added. “This jersey may leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Vinaka vaka levu, God bless and moce mada.”
