Firefighters Successfully Contain Large Grass Fire in Wollongong
Firefighters have successfully gained control of a significant grass fire that erupted this afternoon in Brownsville, Wollongong.
The incident began shortly before 2:30 PM in grassland located behind the northern on-ramp of the Princes Highway, at Kanahooka Road. The fire quickly escalated, jumping a median strip and igniting nearby bushland.
In response, police promptly diverted traffic away from the affected area to ensure public safety. A strong effort involved seven Fire and Rescue NSW trucks, alongside a bulk water tanker and additional appliances from the Rural Fire Service.
Fire crews engaged multiple approaches to combat the blaze, which extended approximately 200 meters in length. Their coordinated efforts enabled them to regain control of the situation and subsequently begin mopping up operations.
Two firefighters were reported to have suffered from smoke inhalation and have been taken to the hospital for observation. At this moment, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
