First Round Action Heats Up at Roland-Garros 2025

PARIS, France — The first round of Roland-Garros 2025 continued on Tuesday with notable matches featuring Sofia Kenin, Mirra Andreeva, Jack Draper, and Alexander Zverev on the courts.
In a highly anticipated matchup on Court Philippe-Chatrier, No. 31 seed Sofia Kenin faced France’s Varvara Gracheva. Kenin, a former champion at the Australian Open, demonstrated resilience despite fluctuating performances throughout her career. Recently, she regained momentum, reaching the quarter-finals in Dubai and the final in Charleston. ‘I love a battle and I’m ready to fight for every point,’ Kenin stated before the match.
Gracheva, now a French citizen since 2023, previously captivated the crowd at Roland-Garros last year by reaching the fourth round. The support from the home fans promises to add intensity to the match. ‘Playing under the French flag is incredible; the crowd really makes a difference,’ Gracheva said.
Meanwhile, on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, sixth seed Mirra Andreeva reflected on her fond memories at Roland-Garros as she prepared to play Cristina Bucsa. Andreeva reached the semi-finals last year and enjoyed a successful season on the tour, claiming two back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in 2025. ‘When I arrived here for practice, it felt like I never left. My memories are so special,’ she commented.
Jack Draper, seeded fifth, took to the court later in the day against Mattia Bellucci. Draper, who recently broke into the world’s top 10, is known for his powerful forehand and clay-court capabilities. He expressed enthusiasm for competing, stating, ‘I’m excited to show what I’ve worked on this season.’
Alexander Zverev, the third seed, faced Learner Tien after struggling early in the season. Despite a difficult start, Zverev regained confidence with a title win in Munich. ‘I know what it takes to reach the finals; now I need to learn how to win,’ he said candidly.
As the matches unfolded, French fans awaited exciting showdowns, eager to cheer for their national players.
