Flint Mourns the Loss of Eric Mays, Longtime City Councilman
FLINT, MI – Flint City Councilman Eric Mays, a prominent figure in the community, passed away, leaving a void that has deeply impacted the city, as announced on Saturday, Feb. 24.
The news of Mays’ passing was met with shock and sadness by the residents and officials of Flint, with Mayor Sheldon Neeley expressing his condolences and urging the community to respect the privacy of the Mays family during this difficult time.
Mays, aged 65, had been a dedicated public servant, serving his third term as a councilman representing Flint’s 1st Ward, a position he held since 2013.
Known for his outgoing personality and occasionally tumultuous interactions with fellow councilmembers, Mays had garnered both local and national attention, with his actions often going viral on social media platforms.
Despite his controversial moments, Mays maintained a strong following in his ward, winning re-election three times due to his popularity among the constituents.
His electoral victories were hard-fought, notably winning his initial election by a mere eight votes against challenger Anita Brown, and later securing a more decisive victory in the subsequent elections.
The 1st Ward, situated in Flint’s northern region and bordered by Clio Road, Carpenter Road, Person Road, and Saginaw Street, was the constituency that Mays passionately represented.
Flint City Hall announced that in honor of Mays’ memory, the flag at the Hall would be lowered to half-staff starting Monday, Feb. 26, as a tribute to his service and dedication to the community.
