Florian Thauvin Returns to French National Team After Long Absence

Clairefontaine, France – Florian Thauvin, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion, has made a surprising return to the French national football team after a six-year absence. Thauvin, who played a key role in France’s victory in 2018, last represented ‘les bleus’ on June 11, 2019, against Andorra.
After leaving Olympique de Marseille in 2021 for Tigres UANL in Mexico, Thauvin struggled to find his previous form, scoring only eight goals in 38 appearances. However, he reflected positively on his time in Mexico, saying, “I loved the experience. I have great memories of the fans, but I think it wasn’t the right time for me.”
In January 2023, Thauvin returned to Europe to play for Udinese, where he found stability and a supportive environment. “Here, I have found a place where I can work well. I have everything I need to improve day by day,” he stated.
This season, Thauvin has made an impact in Ligue 1, contributing nine assists and five goals. His performance has caught the attention of national team coach Didier Deschamps. Thauvin is currently the fourth player in Ligue 1 for goal opportunities created (17) and has provided 38 crosses into the box.
Thauvin expressed relief and joy at his selection for the upcoming match against Azerbaijan, saying, “It’s not my first call-up, but it feels like one because I’ve been through very difficult times since then.” He is on the verge of breaking a record for the longest absence from the national team, previously held by Larbi Ben Barek, who was absent for six years and 126 days.
As Thauvin prepares to don the French jersey once again, fans eagerly await the return of a player who played an important role in the development of French football.
