Florida Atlantic’s Dusty May Takes Helm at Michigan, Leaving FAU with a Promising Legacy
Florida Atlantic‘s head basketball coach Dusty May has accepted an offer to lead the Michigan Wolverines, bidding farewell to his successful tenure at FAU. May, who gained early basketball experience as a team manager under the legendary Bob Knight at Indiana, solidified his reputation by guiding FAU to unprecedented success.
Shortly after FAU’s loss to Northwestern in the NCAA Tournament, May made the decision to join Michigan, signing a five-year contract. His legacy at FAU includes consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and a remarkable Final Four run in 2023 as a No. 9 seed.
The departure of Juwan Howard from Michigan created an opening that May was quick to fill. Howard, after a tenure that included a Sweet 16 and an Elite Eight appearance, faced team struggles leading to his exit.
May, aged 47, orchestrated a dramatic turnaround at FAU, where he transformed a struggling program into a consistent winner. Under his leadership, FAU transitioned to the American Athletic Conference, capping off his tenure with a 25-9 record this season.
May’s high profile in the coaching world made him a top target for numerous schools, with Louisville and Vanderbilt being prime contenders for his services. Ultimately, Michigan’s appeal, as a member of the Big Ten and its recent investments in the program, pulled May to Ann Arbor.
His departure from FAU marks the end of a successful chapter, leaving behind a legacy of achievement for the Owls. May’s transition to Michigan signifies a new era for both programs, setting the stage for future success and growth in the collegiate basketball landscape.
