Florida Gators’ Heartbreaking NCAA Tournament Loss to Colorado
The Florida Gators suffered a heart-wrenching defeat in the NCAA Tournament against the Colorado Buffaloes, ending their postseason run at the first hurdle. The game, which saw a nail-biting finish, culminated in a game-winning shot by Buffaloes’ point guard KJ Simpson with a mere 2.4 seconds left on the clock, leading to a 102-100 victory for Colorado over coach Todd Golden’s Gators.
The matchup showcased a valiant effort from the Florida side as they attempted a comeback from a 13-point deficit in the second half, eventually tying the game at 100 with less than 10 seconds remaining thanks to a clutch 3-pointer by Gators’ player Walter Clayton Jr. However, Buffaloes’ coach Tad Boyle strategically called a timeout to set up a final play that would see Simpson knocking down the game-winning shot as time expired.
Despite Clayton Jr.’s impressive performance with a team-high 33 points, including scoring the Gators’ final 16 points, it was not enough to secure the win. On the other side, Colorado’s KJ Simpson led his team with 23 points, complemented by a solid 21-point contribution from center Eddie Lampkin.
In a game that saw momentum swings and high-intensity plays, the Gators failed to maintain a strong defensive presence, allowing Colorado to shoot at an impressive 63% from the field and a staggering 60% from beyond the arc. The absence of key player Samuel due to foul trouble further compounded Florida’s challenges, affecting their scoring, defense, and rebounding efforts in critical moments.
Furthermore, a controversial call leading to the disqualification of Alex Condon in his debut start added to the Gators’ woes, with Colorado capitalizing on free-throw opportunities courtesy of the technical foul on coach Todd Golden. The game, riddled with tense moments and strategic plays, ultimately favored the Buffaloes, signaling the end of the road for the Florida Gators in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
