Ford Teams Optimistic Ahead of Bathurst 1000 After Aerodynamic Adjustments
Cameron Waters, a prominent driver in the Supercars Championship, has expressed optimism about Ford‘s chances in the upcoming Bathurst 1000 after a frustrating performance last year. Ford teams, including Waters, had attributed their struggles to an aerodynamic imbalance that affected their cars’ performance during the 2022 race. “Last year was a bit of a hard year – we really needed some changes to the aero if we wanted to have a chance,” Waters commented to Wide World of Sports.
Waters noted significant improvements following the introduction of the Gen3 car for the 2023 season. Despite Ford claiming only one victory in the initial 23 races, significant aerodynamic testing and adjustments have been made. Both the Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro were sent to the USA for extensive testing, leading to changes that balanced the competitiveness of the teams.
According to Waters, the efforts have paid off. “This year it’s very different. Supercars has done a great job with the aero stuff … and we know we have a shot at winning it just like any other car,” he stated. The balancing of performance could end Ford’s five-year win drought at Mount Panorama, with Waters feeling confident in the team’s capabilities.
In preparation for Bathurst, Ford teams have aligned strategies, and Waters will team up once more with James Moffat, with whom he has partnered for the last four years. “You’re not learning each other every year,” Waters reflected on their ongoing partnership, emphasizing their improved teamwork and understanding of the race car.
Practice sessions for the Bathurst 1000 are scheduled to start Thursday, with the race taking place on Sunday. Weather forecasts predict mixed conditions, potentially affecting race strategies. Craig Lowndes, a veteran of the sport, is also set to make his 31st Bathurst start, adding a layer of experience to the event.
