Former AFL Player Cam McCarthy Passes Away at 29
Former professional Australian Rules football player Cam McCarthy has tragically passed away at the age of 29, sending shockwaves through the sporting community.
A statement released by WA Police confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that emergency services responded to an incident at an address in Lake Coogee where McCarthy was found deceased.
The authorities have stated that the circumstances surrounding McCarthy’s death are being treated as non-suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner to investigate further.
McCarthy, who was drafted at pick No.14 in the 2013 national draft, had a career that spanned across both the Fremantle Dockers and the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
He played a total of 70 matches and kicked 99 goals during his time in the AFL before being delisted by Fremantle at the end of the 2020 season.
Having struggled with homesickness during his time at the Giants, McCarthy sought a return to his hometown club of Fremantle, eventually making his way back to the Dockers in 2016 after a period away from the game.
McCarthy’s talent as a key forward was evident throughout his career, with his accurate goal-kicking and marking abilities making him a valuable asset on the field.
Despite his on-field success, McCarthy faced challenges off the field and ultimately parted ways with the Dockers in 2020 after being told his contract would not be extended.
His untimely death marks the third loss of a former Fremantle player under the age of 30 in recent years, adding to the somber list of tragedies that have befallen the club.
The AFL and the AFL Players’ Association have been notified of McCarthy’s passing, with tributes pouring in from fans and colleagues across the league.
