Bernie Kosar Health Update

CLEVELAND — Legendary former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar shared a heartfelt video update on social media Wednesday morning from his hospital bed at University Hospitals. Kosar, 61, discussed the challenges he has faced as he battles liver failure complications, including recent setbacks in his health journey.

In the video, Kosar revealed that he had hoped to undergo a liver transplant last weekend. Unfortunately, the procedure was postponed due to an infected donor organ. After experiencing internal bleeding, he underwent two aggressive medical procedures on Monday and was scheduled for a third procedure on Wednesday.

“I could really use your love, support, and actual prayers today,” Kosar said in his emotional message to fans. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received during this difficult time.

Kosar first disclosed his need for a liver transplant last year and shared that he has been diagnosed with both cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease. Despite recent health challenges, doctors have indicated that his condition has improved since the beginning of the year.

Dr. Anthony Post, a hepatologist at University Hospitals, mentioned that Kosar has adjusted his diet to include more vegetables and lean proteins, and is following a regimen that includes black coffee, which may aid liver health. “There is more than a 90% chance that Kosar will need a new liver,” Dr. Post stated.

During his career, Kosar led the Browns to three AFC Championship Game appearances and ranks third in franchise history with 21,904 passing yards. He has dealt with numerous health issues stemming from football, including around 80 broken bones and over 100 concussions.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns organization expressed their unwavering support for Kosar on social media, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Bernie. We love you and are with you every step of the way.” As he continues to undergo treatment, Kosar remains hopeful and committed to fighting his health challenges.
