Fana Mokoena Resignation

Fana Mokoena, a prominent figure within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and an internationally recognized actor, has officially resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament (MP) in South Africa. This marks the second time Mokoena has stepped down from his parliamentary role, having previously resigned in October 2020.

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo confirmed the resignation on Thursday, stating, “We can confirm that the Speaker is in receipt of a letter of resignation from Mr. Mokoena.” However, Mokoena himself has not commented on the matter, despite repeated attempts to reach him for remarks on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Mokoena initially joined the EFF in May 2014, where he served in the National Council of Provinces. He later transitioned to the National Assembly in August 2016. After resigning in October 2020, Mokoena made a return to the parliamentary scene in June 2023 following the general elections held on May 29.

During his recent tenure, Mokoena was active within the committees focusing on sport, arts and culture, and trade, industry and competition. Sources indicate that his resignation occurred earlier this week, just one day before the former public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, announced her resignation.

The reasons behind Mokoena’s resignation remain unclear as he has yet to make a public statement. Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding the implications and reasons for these recent successive resignations within the EFF and broader political circles.
