Former Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith Hired as Steelers Offensive Coordinator
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made their decision on a new offensive coordinator, with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith set to take on the role. Smith, who was fired by the Falcons earlier this month, will bring his experience and fresh approach to the Steelers’ offense.
Steelers owner Art Rooney II expressed his anticipation for the hire, stating that the team is looking forward to having someone who can help their young players grow and perform at a consistently high level. The hire is expected to be made sooner rather than later.
Prior to his time in Atlanta, Smith served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans from 2019-2020. He has a track record of success and brings valuable experience to the Steelers’ coaching staff.
Smith’s tenure with the Falcons was marked by inconsistency and criticism, particularly regarding his usage of running back Najee Harris and tight end Jaylen Warren. However, Smith has proven himself capable of implementing a strong rushing attack, as evidenced by the Falcons’ third-most rushing yards in the league in 2022 and the Titans’ second-place finish in rushing yards during his time with the team.
The Steelers’ offense is looking to return to a ground attack and improve the quality of quarterback play and development of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett. With running backs Harris and Warren, along with an improving offensive line, the Steelers have a strong foundation for success.
Rooney emphasized that the new offensive coordinator will need to work with the existing roster and its skill sets, without completely overhauling the team overnight. The goal is to find someone who believes in the Steelers’ offensive identity and can build upon the strengths of the current roster.
