Former NFL Linebacker Ronald Powell Dies at 32
Former NFL linebacker Ronald Powell, who played for the New Orleans Saints and was a standout at the University of Florida, has tragically passed away at the age of 32, according to an announcement by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The cause of Powell’s death has not been disclosed at this time.
The NFLPA’s retired players account shared the news on social media, expressing their condolences and describing Powell as a beloved father, brother, and son. They offered comfort to all who knew him during this difficult time.
Former NFL linebacker Junior Galette, a teammate of Powell’s at the New Orleans Saints, also took to social media to mourn his passing. Galette described Powell as an excellent father, respected brother, and loving son, further expressing his sadness over the loss.
Powell had an illustrious college career at the University of Florida, where he played for the Florida Gators from 2010 to 2013. Although he missed the 2012 season due to a torn ACL, Powell was highly regarded as the number one high school prospect by Rivals.
In the 2014 NFL Draft, Powell was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round. He played 14 games during his rookie season, recording two tackles. However, he was released before the start of the 2015 season and was subsequently placed on the Saints’ injured reserve after going unclaimed.
Following his departure from the Saints, Powell signed with the Seattle Seahawks‘ practice squad in September 2016. Despite his potential, he did not get the opportunity to play a regular-season game for either team.
In 2019, Powell joined the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football but was waived before the league ceased operations. His career in professional football unfortunately came to an end.
The death of Ronald Powell is a heartbreaking loss to the football community and all those who knew him. His talent on the field and the kind of person he was off the field will be remembered by many. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
