Former NHL Player Marc Savard Joins Toronto Maple Leafs as Assistant Coach
The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially welcomed Marc Savard as the newest member of their coaching staff, announcing his appointment as an assistant coach. This move finalizes the coaching lineup under head coach Craig Berube, which includes associate coach Lane Lambert, assistant coach Mike Van Ryn, goaltending coach Curtis Sanford, and video coaches Jordan Bean and Sam Kim.
Marc Savard joins the Maple Leafs after a stint as an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames in the previous season. Prior to that, he spent two successful seasons as the head coach of the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League. During his tenure with the Spitfires from 2021 to 2023, Savard achieved a remarkable record of 88 wins, 35 losses, 8 overtime losses, and 5 shootout losses, culminating in an appearance in the OHL Finals in 2022.
An Ottawa, Ontario native, Marc Savard began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues in the 2019-2020 season before transitioning to the Windsor Spitfires. Savard’s playing career in the NHL spanned 807 regular-season games and 25 playoff appearances with teams such as the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, and Boston Bruins. Over his playing career, he accumulated an impressive 706 points, showcasing his prowess as a skilled playmaker and scorer.
Notably, Marc Savard was a two-time NHL All-Star and a Stanley Cup champion with the Boston Bruins in 2011. His draft journey started when he was selected by the New York Rangers in the fourth round, 91st overall, in the 1995 NHL Draft. Savard’s wealth of experience as both a player and a coach makes him a valuable addition to the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching staff, bringing a unique perspective and knowledge to the team.
