Former President Donald Trump is set to officially become the Republican nominee for president at this week’s Republican National Convention, although security concerns loom large following the recent assassination attempt on his life. The four-day event commences on Monday, just two days after the alarming incident took place at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania where shots were fired. CBS News broke the story, reporting that the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fatally injured a rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, and wounded two others, identified as David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

With security precautions heightened after the shooting, federal, state, and local law enforcement officials are on high alert as the RNC approaches. Changes to security measures are being planned after the gunman, Crooks, opened fire outside the security perimeter set up by the Secret Service at the Pennsylvania campaign rally. The FBI, Secret Service, and local law enforcement agencies have sent a joint threat assessment to law enforcement officials, calling for increased vigilance.

About 2,400 delegates from around the country will gather to officially nominate Trump during a roll call vote scheduled for Monday. States will announce their delegate count in alphabetical order, with Trump already having secured the necessary delegates back in March for the nomination. Trump’s official acceptance speech is eagerly anticipated for Thursday night, marking the third time he has been nominated since 2016.

Aside from the nomination process, the Republican Party is set to adopt a new platform at the convention that reflects Trump’s influence on the party. The platform notably softens its stance on abortion, shifts focus to individual states on the matter, and proposes initiatives such as a missile defense shield and promises of tax cuts and mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

This year’s convention will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the Fiserv Forum arena. Milwaukee, known as a Democratic stronghold, is strategically hosting the convention in a battleground state to reach key voters. The convention days are packed with speeches, highlighting a list of speakers which includes lawmakers, television personalities, and members of the Trump family.

Notably absent from the speaker list are Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump. However, other Trump family members, including Donald Trump Jr. and Lara Trump, are scheduled to address the convention attendees. Various high-profile figures such as Tucker Carlson, Majority Garrett, and Caitlin Huey-Burns are also expected to take to the stage, along with prominent politicians like Senator Tom Cotton, Senator Marco Rubio, Senator Tim Scott, and Governor Burgum.
