Former Temple Basketball Player Hysier Miller Under Federal Investigation for Alleged Point-Shaving
A former member of Temple University‘s men’s basketball team, Hysier Miller, is currently under federal investigation for allegedly engaging in point-shaving and betting on his own games. The investigation, which began in March, was triggered by unusual betting activity observed during a Temple game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Miller, who was the leading scorer for the Owls during the 2023-24 season, averaged 15.9 points per game and was named to the American Athletic Conference‘s all-tournament team. However, his career took a significant turn when he transferred to Virginia Tech for his senior year, only to be dismissed last month due to circumstances related to his time at Temple.
The investigation focuses on a specific game on March 7, where Temple lost to UAB 100-72. The betting line for this game saw a significant shift, with Temple initially being a 1.5-point underdog but eventually closing as a seven-point underdog. This unusual movement in the betting line raised red flags and prompted the investigation.
Temple University has stated that it is aware of the allegations and will cooperate fully with any inquiries. University President John Fry emphasized that the university takes these allegations seriously and that everyone involved in Temple athletics receives mandatory training on NCAA rules, including those related to sports wagering.
Miller’s legal team has issued a statement expressing confidence in his ability to overcome the current challenges, highlighting his resilience in the face of adversity. The case underscores broader concerns about the impact of legal sports betting on college athletics and the potential for wrongdoing among athletes.
