ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Frank Ragnow, celebrated as one of the best centers in the NFL, is coming out of retirement to rejoin the Detroit Lions. This move comes as a surprise since Ragnow had announced his retirement back in June and appeared to be done for the season.

The Lions confirmed Ragnow’s return by sharing a photo of him running onto the field at Ford Field, leaving fans excited about the news. NFL Network and ESPN quickly reported on Ragnow’s comeback, which comes just in time for the Thanksgiving game.

Ragnow originally retired after several seasons plagued by injuries, including knee, back, ankle, and toe problems. Despite these challenges, he had a stellar season last year, making the Pro Bowl and earning second-team All-Pro honors while starting 16 games.

His reputation for toughness is well-earned; he famously finished a game with a fractured toe against the Green Bay Packers in 2020 without allowing a single sack. Ragnow underwent meniscus surgery in 2023 but managed to return ahead of schedule, demonstrating his resilience.

When Ragnow retired, he expressed deep gratitude toward the Lions organization and fans, stating, “I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give… this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life.”

Sources close to Ragnow say he “loves the game,” which appears to be a major factor in his decision to return. His comeback is expected to significantly bolster the team’s offensive line and address weaknesses that have emerged with his absence.

In the meantime, Graham Glasgow has served as the starting center, while rookie Tate Ratledge has started at right guard. Glasgow’s versatility allows him to shift back to left guard when Ragnow is ready to play.
