ORLANDO, Fla. — Franz Wagner continues to impress this NBA season, showcasing his offensive and defensive prowess even after recovering from a significant injury. The forward, playing for the Orlando Magic, is currently averaging a career-high 24.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in just 45 games this season.

Despite missing 20 games due to a torn right abdominal muscle, Wagner has made a remarkable return to form. He has scored over 20 points in 35 games and exceeded 30 points on 13 occasions, all within a season that still has 16 games remaining. With his consistency, he remains a critical component of the Magic’s offense.

Wagner’s offensive skills are complemented by his development into a strong defensive player. This season, he has recorded an average of 1.36 steals, nearing a milestone of 300 career steals and just two blocks away from reaching the 100-block mark. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses is reflected in his statistics — he has recorded at least one steal in 32 games and two or more steals in 19 games.

According to advanced statistics, Wagner ranks fourth among all forwards with a 105.8 individual defensive rating among players who have participated in at least 45 games this season. He also ranks second in defensive win shares at 0.162, just behind league MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“Physically, you’ve got to be in really good shape to play both sides,” Wagner stated earlier this season. “Mentally, if you play enough games, you’re going to figure out some stuff that works and know personnel a little bit better. That stuff helps.”

Wagner recognizes that when his shots aren’t falling, his defensive contributions can help him and his team regain momentum. “What I really like about it is that if I’m not having a good game or not having a good couple of possessions, that’s a way to get back into the game, get into a little bit of a flow and have an impact that way,” he explained.

The Orlando Magic are facing new challenges as they prepare for their upcoming game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday at the Smoothie King Center, a matchup that promises to test Wagner’s skills on both ends of the court.
