Fred Couples Golfing At Hoag Classic 2025

Newport Beach, California – Golf legend Fred Couples showcased remarkable tenacity during the Hoag Classic despite battling illness. The 64-year-old finished Round 1 tied for seventh place, demonstrating his determination to compete at a high level.

In a post-round interview, Couples candidly discussed the health challenges he faced leading up to the tournament, noting that he had been unwell for several days. “I was struggling to hear the click of the ball hitting my putter,” Couples remarked, illustrating how his condition impacted his game.

This isn’t new territory for the 1992 Masters champion. Couples has managed ongoing back issues since 1994, relying on cortisone shots and support from his physical therapist, Dr. Chad Beauchamp. He recalled an injury from the 2020 Sanford International as just another chapter in his storied career.

Despite his struggles, Couples remains motivated. He has made 31 cuts at Augusta National, trailing only Jack Nicklaus, and is determined to make the cut at the upcoming Masters tournament in 2025. Discussions with Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley are on the agenda as he prepares for the event.

Couples’ recent remarks about fellow golfer Brooks Koepka‘s potential return to the PGA Tour created waves within the golf community. With Koepka’s LIV contract set to expire in 2025, Couples’ comments have garnered significant attention, sparking debate among fans and players alike.

Six-time major winner Phil Mickelson publicly criticized Couples, calling his comments a ‘low-class jerk move’ and claiming that he was overstepping boundaries in discussing Koepka’s narrative. Although Mickelson later deleted his social media post, the fallout exacerbated the existing divide within the golf world.

As fans await Koepka’s response to the ongoing speculation, it is evident that the Golf community is abuzz with narrative as intertwined as the games themselves. With Couples’ health journey ongoing and the controversy surrounding Koepka, the drama continues to unfold on and off the course.
