French Cyclists Aim for Glory in Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Liège, Belgium – French cyclists are gearing up for the prestigious Liège-Bastogne-Liège race, seeking to reclaim their status in the cycling world after a few years of diminished results. Scheduled for this Sunday, the race is seen as a prime opportunity for riders like Romain Grégoire, Kévin Vauquelin, Romain Bardet, and Aurélien Paret-Peintre.
In recent years, the French have struggled in spring classics, especially with the absence of top rider Christophe Laporte due to illness. However, the upcoming Doyenne offers a chance for redemption as they aim for top finishes. Last year, the French were notably strong, with Romain Bardet finishing second and Paret-Peintre in fifth.
“It’s a race I love and one of the most beautiful on the calendar,” said Paret-Peintre, who is participating in his sixth Liège-Bastogne-Liège. “I can’t wait to compete.” The course is favorably suited for puncatur-oriented riders like the French contingent.
The challenging landscape of short, steep climbs plays to the strengths of the French riders, especially in a season where pure sprinters have been less prominent. There is a notable legacy of success for French cyclists in this event, despite not having a winner since Bernard Hinault in 1980.
Romain Bardet expressed nostalgia as he prepares for what could be his final appearance, saying, “This race has marked all my springs.” Voeckler, the French team’s coach, noted the collective spirit among the riders, contributing to their determination as they aim for success in the race.
While the competition is fierce, especially with the likes of Tadej Pogačar, Paret-Peintre remains optimistic. “It’s a tough task against the best, but there’s still room for those behind,” he remarked. With races like the Amstel Gold Race showcasing their capabilities, the French riders will look to turn their potential into triumph this weekend.
As anticipation builds for the event, many hope to see the French flag raised once again at the finish line.
