Fresno State Basketball Team Investigation News

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The Fresno State men’s basketball program is embroiled in controversy as it faces scrutiny for alleged ties to sports gambling. The NCAA and the university confirmed investigations into the matter on Saturday, leading to the suspension of two key players for at least their game against Air Force.

Sources informed ESPN that the investigation began after the university received a tip concerning potential gambling activities. This prompted Fresno State to launch an internal inquiry, which subsequently involved the NCAA.

In a statement, Fresno State Athletics announced that guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins would be withheld from competition while the university reviews their eligibility. The statement did not disclose the nature of the eligibility review.

“Fresno State men’s basketball student-athletes Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins are being withheld from competition as the University reviews an eligibility matter,” the statement read. “The University and Athletics Department will have no further comments regarding the matter at this time.”

Weaver and Collins have been pivotal to the team, with Weaver averaging 12.5 points per game and Collins contributing 12 points and 4.7 assists per game. Their absence will likely affect the Bulldogs, who are already struggling this season.

The Bulldogs’ woes on the court have intensified, culminating in a record-setting nine-game losing streak and a disappointing 5-22 overall mark (1-15 Mountain West Conference) this season. Their most recent defeat by 23 points against an unnamed opponent further solidified this season as one of the worst in program history.

A third former team member, Mykell Robinson, is also reportedly under investigation. Robinson had not played since January 11 and is no longer on the roster. He had been averaging 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds before exiting the team.

The Fresno Bee was among the first to report the investigations surrounding Fresno State’s basketball program. The circumstances surrounding the suspensions and the ongoing investigation reflect ongoing challenges for head coach Vance Walberg, who is navigating a team beset by setbacks and controversy.

The Bulldogs were slated to face the Air Force Falcons, who have also had a disappointing season at 3-23 overall and 0-15 in the Mountain West Conference.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel contributed to this report.
