TORONTO, Canada — The Minnesota Frost scored twice in the third period to secure a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Sceptres on Friday night in Game 2 of their best-of-five PWHL playoff series. The win leveled the series at 1-1, setting the stage for a crucial Game 3 on Sunday at Xcel Energy Center.
Despite being outshot 13-4 in the final period, the Frost managed to clinch the game with important late goals. Sophie Jaques broke a 3-3 tie with just over six minutes remaining, followed by Mellissa Channell-Watkins scoring on a power play to seal the win with 71 seconds left on the clock.
Lee Stecklein had a standout performance, scoring twice after tying the game early in the second period. The Frost took an early 3-1 lead but saw Toronto equalize with two goals in quick succession, including a power-play goal from Savannah Harmon.
Frost’s head coach Ken Klee praised Stecklein’s contributions, stating, “She was awesome. Different players need to step up, and she exemplifies that.”
In goal, Maddie Rooney notched 27 saves for Minnesota, while Toronto’s Kristin Campbell faced 25 shots and allowed more than two goals for the first time in her playoff career. The Frost played without forward Britta Curl-Salemme, who was suspended due to an illegal hit in Game 1, underscoring the team’s depth and resilience.
The Sceptres had previously taken Game 1 with a 3-2 win, highlighting the competitive nature of this playoff series. As the two teams prepare for Game 3, the Frost look to carry the momentum of this comeback victory.
