PARIS, Aug 4 — Gabby Thomas from the United States stepped into the spotlight at the Paris Olympics, easily securing her spot in the semi-finals of the women’s 200 meters. She posted the fastest time of the morning preliminary round with a solid run of 22.20 seconds.

Interestingly, Thomas’ main competition, Jamaica‘s world champion Shericka Jackson, withdrew from the event just hours before it started due to an injury she sustained in Hungary earlier this season.

Following Thomas in the rankings was Nigeria‘s runner, who clocked in at 22.24 seconds. Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, who had a disappointing run in the 100 meters, came in third with a time of 22.28 seconds. Asher-Smith expressed her happiness with her performance, saying, “I am really happy with that, it was easy and good,” and noted that running under pressure brought out the best in her.

Meanwhile, St. Lucia‘s Julien Alfred also made a statement, completing her heat in 22.41 seconds, showing that she’s also a contender in the 200 meters.

Gabby Thomas, who previously snagged a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and was a silver medalist at last year’s world championships, has high hopes for gold in Paris. She currently holds the fastest time globally this season at 21.78 seconds.

The absence of Shericka Jackson is a significant loss for the competition, especially considering Jackson’s impressive time of 21.41 seconds from last year’s World Championships — just shy of breaking the world record set by the legendary Florence Griffith-Joyner.

Also missing from the lineup is Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who is sidelined due to an Achilles injury. With such key figures out of the race, the dynamics of the competition have changed considerably.

The women’s 200-meter finals are scheduled for Tuesday, where the remaining athletes will compete for Olympic glory.
