Gabriel Diallo Shocks with Quarter-Finals Run at Madrid Open

Madrid, Spain – Canadian tennis player Gabriel Diallo has reached the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid Open, marking a significant milestone in his career. The 23-year-old’s journey began with uncertainty after losing in the second round of qualifying, but fate intervened when a last-minute withdrawal created a spot for him in the main draw.
Dials, currently ranked No. 78, reflected on his unexpected opportunity, saying, “I was out of the tournament, then I got a call saying I could take someone’s spot. It does free you a bit, with it being a second [chance].” He successfully navigated through his matches, including a remarkable comeback victory against Britain’s Cameron Norrie and a tense win against No. 15 seed Grigor Dimitrov, in which he saved three match points.
Diallo now stands just two wins away from matching the achievement of fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who reached the final last year in Madrid. “With Felix, we’re very close. I even trained at his dad’s house for a couple of years,” Diallo stated, emphasizing the supportive relationships among Canadian players.
After commencing the tournament with a 6-8 record this season, Diallo is now projected to rise to No. 53 in the ATP rankings. He will face Italian player Jannik Sinner next, who is also on a winning streak and has recently entered the top 10.
Diallo expressed his excitement for the matches ahead, stating, “I just want to take my chance — you don’t get many.” His impressive performances in Madrid have highlighted his potential, as he continues to pursue a breakthrough in his tennis career.
