Gaethje Promises Aggressive Comeback Ahead of Fiziev Rematch

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — UFC fighter Justin Gaethje is set to return to his aggressive fighting style in a rematch against Rafael Fiziev on March 8 at UFC 313. This highly anticipated event comes after Gaethje faced a setback last April when he lost the BMF title to Max Holloway in a thrilling, albeit brutal fight.
Gaethje, known for his electrifying performances, acknowledged that his past few fights have featured a more strategic approach that veered away from his trademark aggression. In a recent interview with Shak MMA, he expressed his frustrations about this shift, stating, “I think I fell into a tendency to not move forward as much as I should in this sport.”
Originally scheduled to fight Dan Hooker, who withdrew due to injury, Gaethje now faces Fiziev, whom he regards as one of the toughest competitors in the lightweight division. “I think [Fiziev]’s got some of the best striking skills, and he’s one of the most dynamic strikers in the UFC at this weight class,” Gaethje said, emphasizing the importance of controlling the pace of the bout.
Determined to recapture his former fighting spirit, Gaethje stated that he plans to return to his roots. “If you look at the champions, they’re moving forward 70 to 80% of the time, and I think that has to be implemented if you want to be successful in this sport,” he explained.
Gaethje’s past performances, notably his victories over Michael Chandler and Fiziev, have been marked by a more cautious approach. Reflecting on his strategy, he said, “I found success with being safer, but ultimately, that’s not the answer.”
The T-Mobile Arena will host Gaethje’s fight against Fiziev, where he hopes to showcase a more aggressive and refined version of himself. As he prepares for this pivotal match, Gaethje’s focus remains on reclaiming his position in the lightweight title conversation, where he currently ranks third.
Gaethje believes a decisive victory over Fiziev might set him up for a title shot against current champion Islam Makhachev, particularly since both Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan have uncertain paths. Reflecting on his aspirations, Gaethje remarked, “With a huge win here… I think they’re gonna have to consider me.”
The upcoming fight marks Gaethje’s first appearance since UFC 300, where he experienced a devastating knockout. Although the memory of that fight lingers, Gaethje is approaching this opportunity with renewed vigor. “Great reminder of what’s at stake. Live by the sword, die by the sword. It’s all I know,” he stated, acknowledging the risks associated with his fighting style.
With a return to his aggressive roots, Gaethje aims to leave a lasting impression at UFC 313 and solidify his chance at the lightweight championship belt.
