Galatasaray Faces Uphill Battle Against AZ Alkmaar in Europa League

ISTANBUL, Turkey — Galatasaray must overcome a significant deficit as they prepare to face AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at UKRams Global Stadium. After losing the first leg 4-1, the Turkish club is tasked with scoring three goals without conceding any to advance to the last 16.
Galatasaray struggled in the first leg, where an early goal by them was overshadowed by AZ Alkmaar’s relentless scoring. The match turned dire for the Turkish giants when defender Kaan Ayhan was sent off, forcing them to play with ten men and ultimately leading to their downfall. As they head into the return leg, Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk expressed the urgency of their situation, saying, “This is a do-or-die match for us. We must be effective and tactical.”
Despite the challenge, Galatasaray finds hope in their strong home performance, having scored three or more goals in six of their last seven European home matches. Buruk acknowledged the passionate support from the fans, noting that the crowd can inspire the team to defy the odds. “Our fans are our tenth player. We need them,” he added.
Statistically, history poses a daunting challenge. Only once has a team rallied from a three-goal deficit in the first leg of a Europa League knockout tie — Valencia managed it against Basel in 2014. In comparison, Galatasaray must also contend with their defensive vulnerabilities; they have conceded at least once in their last 21 continental matches, raising concerns about their ability to keep a clean sheet.
Az Alkmaar enters the matchup with confidence, having enjoyed a recent domestic break and coming off a strong performance in the KNVB Beker quarter-finals. With only Ajax conceding fewer goals than them this season, they are well-prepared heading to Istanbul. Coach Maarten Marten recognized the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, “We know Galatasaray will come strong, but we believe in our capabilities.”
AZ’s attacking prowess also poses a significant threat, with Troy Parrott leading their offensive charge. The striker has scored 17 goals this season, including three in recent Europa League outings. Marten believes their scoring form can carry them through this critical match.
Both teams are set to return key players to their line-ups. Galatasaray will welcome back Victor Osimhen and another star player after serving suspensions, boosting their chances. In contrast, AZ will be without a couple of key injuries but is optimistic about their depth overcoming these hurdles.
As the clock ticks down to kickoff, Galatasaray remains hopeful to write a historic comeback tale, while AZ Alkmaar aims to navigate through to the next round with determination.
