LA Galaxy Set for CONCACAF Clash Against C.S. Herediano

LOS ANGELES, CA — The LA Galaxy will face C.S. Herediano in the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. PT. This matchup marks the Galaxy’s first appearance in the tournament since the 2015-16 season, following their victory in the 2024 MLS Cup.
The Galaxy, who earned a bye to this stage due to their championship status, are set to host the second leg at home on March 12. The aggregate winner between these teams will progress to the quarterfinals, facing the Mexican side Tigres UANL if they advance.
“We’re excited to return to the Champions Cup and face a tough opponent in Herediano,” Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said. “It’s an important match not just for this tournament but for our season ahead.”
C.S. Herediano earned their spot in the Round of 16 after defeating MLS competition in the previous round, coming back to win 2-1 on aggregate following a scoreless first leg. The Costa Rican club, known as Los Florenses, previously met the Galaxy in 2013, losing 4-1 over two legs.
Despite their pedigree, the Galaxy are facing challenges ahead of the match, including injuries to star players. The absence of designated players due to injuries—a midfielder following an ACL tear and a winger nursing a quad issue—complicates their preparations.
“Injuries are part of the game, but we have depth in our squad and expect others to step up,” Vanney remarked. “We need to shift our focus and build some momentum as we head into this crucial part of the season.”
Seven MLS clubs remain in the tournament, which offers a prestigious spot in the upcoming 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The final is slated for June 1.
The Galaxy’s performance in the tournament will be closely watched, especially given their rocky start to the 2025 MLS season, losing their initial two matches. The team aims to find its footing against Herediano and turn around their momentum.
