Garry Monk Appointed as Cambridge United Head Coach on Long-term Contract
Garry Monk, the former manager of Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, has been unveiled as the new head coach of Cambridge United on a contract that extends until the summer of 2026. This appointment comes following the sudden departure of Neil Harris, who left the U’s after just 17 games to take over at Millwall.
The 44-year-old Monk, known for his stints at Swansea City, Middlesbrough, and Birmingham City, expressed his satisfaction with the stability in ownership at Cambridge United. He highlighted the importance of finding a club with a clear plan and vision, something he believes the U’s offer.
Monk’s last managerial role was at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was relieved of his duties after 14 months. He emphasized his frustration with the lack of stability at his previous clubs but felt confident that Cambridge United provides a different environment for him to thrive in.
Cambridge United, currently fighting relegation in League One, introduced Monk ahead of their crucial match against Northampton Town. Majority owner Paul Barry lauded Monk’s experience and leadership skills, underscoring his suitability for the club’s project moving forward.
Barry Corr, the interim coach during the transition period, will continue to be a part of Monk’s backroom staff alongside Kevin Betsy. The U’s are keen on securing their League One status in the remaining 11 games of the season.
Monk’s extensive playing career at Swansea City, where he also had a successful managerial spell, brings a wealth of experience to Cambridge United. The club’s fanbase is hopeful that Monk can steer the team to safety and set the foundation for future success.
