The world of darts is experiencing unprecedented growth, with increased television viewership and sold-out venues across various countries, including the Netherlands and Germany. Despite this expansion, veteran player Gary Anderson has expressed frustration with the focus of media attention in the sport. He argues that the spotlight is not being rightly placed on top performers, such as current world champion Luke Humphries.

In a recent press conference, Anderson, a two-time world champion himself, was vocal about his dissatisfaction with how Humphries’ achievements are being overshadowed by the emerging star Beau Greaves, among others. “It’s not just being world champion,” the Scottish player stated. “What has Luke [Humphries] won in the last two years? He has won just about everything.” Anderson went on to describe the lack of recognition for Humphries as “a load of rubbish,” highlighting the player’s extensive list of titles.

Humphries, at 29, has collected numerous accolades, including the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam, and World Matchplay titles. Despite these accomplishments, Anderson feels that the focus remains disproportionately on younger competitors like Greaves, instead of appreciating Humphries’ consistent performance during his peak years.

The press conference also saw Anderson, fresh from a victory against Michael Smith, respond vehemently to questions about his retirement. “This is what happens when you work for press and TV. You’ve not got a clue,” he retorted. Anderson criticized the media’s understanding of his career, emphasizing his autonomy over retirement plans.

In the same venue, Humphries was praised for his remarkable comeback in a match against Stephen Bunting, despite distractions caused by the crowd’s football-style chanting. Yet, the headlines were dominated by the upset loss of Littler to Rob Cross, diverting attention from Humphries and Anderson.

Humphries himself has previously commented on the public’s focus shifting from his achievements to the younger talent in the sport. “I think a lot of the fans sort of respect and understand the things I’ve achieved and how incredible it is,” Humphries stated, noting that he values his career milestones over social media presence or celebrity encounters, unlike his younger counterparts.
