Gary Anderson Defends Fellow Darts Player Luke Humphries Amidst Recognition Debate
Gary Anderson, the esteemed Scottish darts player, recently expressed his belief that fellow competitor Luke Humphries does not receive the recognition he deserves. Anderson made these comments while discussing Humphries’ rise to the world number one ranking over the past year.
The remarks by Anderson come as the World Grand Prix continues in Leicester, with Anderson scheduled to face Belgium’s Mike De Decker in the second round on Thursday evening. The match, which is being broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports+, has added interest following Anderson’s recent praise for Humphries.
“Gary had some lovely words to say about me,” commented Humphries, in response to Anderson’s statements. “When a legend of the game and someone you look up to says nice things about you, it makes you feel good inside.” He also emphasized his admiration for Anderson, whom he described as the “best player in the world.”
Despite the support from Anderson, Humphries acknowledges the talent of rising star Luke Littler, whom he referred to as the current “superstar” of darts. Littler, a teenage sensation from Warrington, has been dominating headlines after defeating Humphries in the Premier League Darts earlier this year.
Humphries, who has had a remarkable year, winning several major titles including the Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals, and the World Championship, stated, “I do feel like I’ve got a lot of credit. I don’t feel like the media hasn’t given me credit. I just think when you’ve got a superstar [like Littler], it’s hard not to go with that.”
Sky Sports Darts commentator Dan Dawson echoed Anderson’s sentiments, noting, “Gary seems to think people aren’t giving Luke Humphries enough respect. It might be because Luke Littler was favourite for the World Grand Prix. He’s won more titles than anyone this year, and the young lad is an absolute sensation.”
The rivalry between Littler and Humphries is a significant point of attention, with Littler leading their head-to-head battles 8-4 this year. However, several matches have gone down to the wire, indicating the competitiveness between the two players.
As the World Grand Prix continues, both Anderson and Humphries are poised to further solidify their positions within the world of professional darts, with fans eagerly anticipating potential matchups and outcomes.
