Florida Gators Basketball Team Final Four Celebration

Gainesville, Fla. — As the Florida Gators prepare for their first Final Four since 2014, senior guards Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin, and Will Richard shared their insights on a recent episode of the Gator Tales podcast. Hosted by Sean Kelley and presented by UF Health, the episode captures the essence of the team’s journey leading up to the historic matchup against Auburn.

The Gators, who have significantly improved since the arrivals of Clayton, Martin, and Richard, will face Auburn this weekend in a national semifinal. Kelley spoke with each player about their experiences, their aspirations, and the remarkable nature of this season.

“Just having faith, trusting God, and putting in the work has been essential for me,” Martin said, highlighting the importance of teamwork and commitment during their journey. Martin, who previously played for Florida Atlantic University, reflected on the transformative potential of the Final Four experience. “It’s life-changing. These guys don’t know it yet, but they get a bump in their resumes, they gain fame. It’s life-changing,” he said.

Clayton voiced his excitement over a significant win against a top-tier opponent. “Beating a program like UConn, especially one with back-to-back championships, meant a lot. That victory stands out for me,” he stated. Clayton has made a name for himself, averaging 22.3 points per game during the tournament while performing under pressure.

Richard shared his feelings about witnessing the Final Four banner during practice. “Walking in and seeing the Final Fours up there is special,” he said. “It’s a moment I will never forget.” This marks Richard’s first visit to San Antonio, and he expressed a sense of pride in what the team has accomplished.

The Gators’ recent success can be attributed in part to their strong teamwork and determination. Martin stands out as a pivotal player, using his past experiences, including playing quarterback in high school, to fuel his tenacity. He noted that he will be the first player to appear in two Final Fours with different teams.

As the team gears up for their matchup against Auburn, they reflect on the challenges they have faced and the triumphs they have shared, united by a common goal of championship glory. The Florida Gators players are determined to make their mark in the tournament and bring pride to Gator Nation.
