Florida Gators Basketball Merrimack Game

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The No. 10 Florida Gators men’s basketball team will host the Merrimack Warriors this Friday at 7 p.m. in a sold-out game at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. This matchup marks Championship Ring Night, where all attendees will receive replica rings from last year’s NCAA championship.

After a season-opening loss to Arizona, Florida enters the game with a 3-1 record, most recently defeating Miami 82-68. Merrimack comes into the contest with a 2-3 record after winning two straight games, including a 72-65 victory over Maine earlier this week.

“It’s important to handle business and get some confidence,” said Florida head coach Todd Golden. “We need to prepare for the unique challenges Merrimack brings, especially their zone defense.”

The Warriors are known for their speedy style of play, often utilizing smaller lineups with four guards. Florida’s front court, averaging 6-foot-10, holds a significant size advantage over Merrimack, whose tallest player is 6-foot-8.

In their last meeting on December 5, 2023, Florida defeated Merrimack 77-57. In that game, Walter Clayton Jr. led the Gators with 26 points. Florida will look to replicate that success, aiming for their second win over the Warriors.

Florida’s key players, including Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon, have recently demonstrated strong performances, each achieving double-doubles in their last game against Miami. The team will need contributions from its bench, with junior guard Urban Klavzar providing a boost with 15 points against the Hurricanes.

“It’s crucial for our depth to step up,” Golden added. “We want to ensure everyone is ready, especially with tough games ahead against ranked opponents.”

Fans can tune into the game on SEC Network+, with commentary provided by Ryan Urquhart and Mark Wise. Florida is expected to be a heavy favorite, listed at 37.5 points over Merrimack according to betting odds.

With a busy non-conference schedule ahead, including ranked opponents like No. 5 Duke and No. 3 Connecticut, Friday’s game is essential for the Gators to build momentum and confidence.
