GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators are enlisting the help of Steve Spurrier Jr. to address their struggling offense. Interim head coach Billy Gonzales announced on Wednesday that Spurrier, who was hired as an offensive analyst earlier this year, will take on a greater role with the quarterbacks as the team prepares for its upcoming game against No. 5 Georgia on November 1.

Gonzales, stepping in after the dismissal of head coach Billy Napier, emphasized the need for changes in their offensive strategy, particularly to enhance player performance. “What we’re trying to do right now is tweak a couple of things so we can put our players in a better situation to go out and make plays and perform at a higher level,” he stated.

Napier’s exit came after a disappointing four seasons, during which the Gators accumulated only 50 points in losses to rivals and fell to 15th in the SEC in scoring. Gonzales’s immediate aim is to unlock the potential of an offense that believes it has the talent to compete within the conference.

As part of the revamped strategy, offensive coordinator Russ Callaway will work alongside quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara from the booth, while Spurrier will be on the sideline directly interacting with sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway.

Spurrier’s experience, which includes time spent coaching alongside his father, a Hall of Fame player and coach, will play a pivotal role in this transition. “Whenever you’re around one of the greatest offensive minds in history, it’s obviously going to rub off on you as well,” Gonzales remarked.

Lagway has had a challenging season, throwing for 1,513 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions, all while contending with a struggling offensive line. His recent performances have shown improvement as he recovers from various injuries. “It’s been a long journey, and I’m thankful for the good and the bad,” Lagway shared. “God doesn’t make any mistakes. I’m just excited to see where my journey continues and how I can continue to get better.”
