MADRID, Spain — Gavi is back with the Spanish national team after recovering from a serious knee injury. The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed coach Luis de la Fuente with his performance towards the end of the season, making him a key player for the upcoming UEFA Nations League.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Gavi discussed his competitive style and the mixed reactions it draws. “Many people see me as a competitor, a warrior,” he said. “But I also have quality with the ball, and many don’t appreciate that.” He acknowledged that some fans might dislike his playing style but emphasized that he aims to prove his skills on the pitch.
When asked about the reasons why he might be hated, Gavi cryptically responded, “You know where that comes from. But as long as the Barcelona fans love me, that’s all that matters.”
He also addressed rumors linking him to Paris Saint-Germain, firmly stating, “I want to stay at Barcelona. This is the club of my life, and I will do everything to succeed here.”
Gavi expressed gratitude for the trust shown in him by coach Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona and acknowledged his relationship with Luis de la Fuente, who has supported him throughout his recovery. “He has always asked how I was doing, and I’m very happy to be back,” he said.
The young star reflected on missing the UEFA Euro 2024, saying it was painful not to be part of the squad, but he remains optimistic about future successes. “Life has a way of bringing joys,” he shared.
Gavi described his injury recovery as a tough journey but highlighted the valuable lessons learned. “I’ve learned to channel my energy and manage my feelings,” he noted. “The suffering was worth it; my goal was to get back to playing football, and that makes me happy.”
In closing, Gavi shared fond memories of his relationship with fellow player Ansu Fati, the influence of veteran Sergio Busquets, and his hopes for future championships, promising to continue improving as he helps lead the next generation of players.
