George Pickens’ Future Uncertain as Steelers Prepare for 2025 NFL Season

PITTSBURGH, PA — George Pickens is entering the last year of his rookie contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and uncertainty surrounds his future with the team. Despite Pittsburgh acquiring DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, they have expressed a desire to retain Pickens as they gear up for the 2025 NFL season.
General manager Omar Khan praised both players before the NFL Draft, stating, “We’re glad we have George and DK [Metcalf] here. I think they’re going to be exciting for everyone to watch.” However, reports surfaced during the draft that the Steelers had discussed trading Pickens with other teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, though no deal was finalized.
NFL Insider James Palmer recently highlighted that the relationship between Pickens and the Steelers may be strained. “His time in Pittsburgh… is limited. It has not gone well behind the scenes between George Pickens and the Pittsburgh Steelers and everybody involved,” Palmer said. “Would he be departing after this season? Yes, in a lot of people’s minds.”
Pickens, who turned 24 years old recently, has recorded 2,841 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in his career, including a standout season in which he gained 1,140 yards and averaged a league-high 18.1 yards per reception. The Steelers opted not to draft another wide receiver, which positions Pickens and Metcalf as the team’s starting duo, supported by Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, and Roberts Woods as depth options.
While the Steelers currently have no clear replacement plan for Pickens should he depart, the possibility of his exit remains likely. As the roster prepares for upcoming workouts, attention will be on whether Pickens can establish a more positive standing with the team moving forward.
