George Russell Claims First Pole Position of 2025 Canadian Grand Prix

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – JUNE 14, 2025 – George Russell secured his first pole position of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Canadian Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen by 0.160 seconds during qualifying at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Russell set a blistering time of 1 minute 10.899 seconds, marking the second consecutive year he will start from P1 in Montreal.
“Today was awesome in front of this amazing crowd,” said Russell, reflecting on his performance. “To be honest that last lap was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life.” He added that he felt confident throughout his final run, as every corner saw him gaining time. “Crossing the line and seeing we were P1 was a real surprise but I was so chuffed with it,” he said.
Verstappen, who finished in second, had initially set the pace in the final moments of qualifying but was ultimately bested by Russell. “Overall this weekend has been quite positive for us,” Verstappen commented. “I’m happy with second. Hopefully tomorrow we can have a good start and look after our tyres.”
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, despite struggling earlier in the weekend, managed to secure the third position, completing the top three. “I’m pleased with third today,” Piastri said. “Now we’ll work hard overnight to carry that momentum into tomorrow’s race.”
Qualifying saw a dramatic finish as drivers pushed their limits on both medium and soft compounds. Russell’s efficient use of the medium Pirelli tyres proved effective, particularly in the final qualifying segment. Fellow competitors faced various challenges, including traffic and tyre performance issues, impacting their overall times.
As the race approaches, team principals are aware of the unpredictable nature of the event, particularly with the rising temperatures anticipated. Mercedes’ Toto Wolff expressed optimism regarding their team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their competitive edge. “We need to make sure we build on that and race well tomorrow,” he stated.
With track conditions expected to remain challenging, drivers will have their work cut out for them as they prepare for the Grand Prix. Russell’s confidence and aggressive strategies will be a focal point, particularly given his history with Verstappen and the potential for fierce competition.
“I’ve got a few more points on my licence to play with,” Russell joked, hinting at the potential for intense racing.”
