Gervonta Davis Contemplates Retirement Amid Upcoming Title Defense

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Gervonta Davis, the reigning WBA lightweight champion and a significant figure in boxing, shocked fans this week with his intention to step away from the sport by the end of 2025. The 28-year-old athlete is currently ranked No. 8 in the world by Ring Magazine and is set to defend his title against WBA super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach on March 1.
Despite anticipation surrounding his upcoming clash, Davis has indicated that he is questioning his commitment to the sport. Speaking on a podcast with rapper Lil Yachty, he expressed a desire to take a break from boxing instead of fully retiring. “I want to get myself together,” Davis stated. “I really want to get myself together. Not retire but take a break.”
Davis’s recent remarks have sparked concerns among boxing enthusiasts regarding whether they will witness major fights at 140 lbs, including potential unifications that fans desire, before his retirement. After a press conference announcing his fight with Roach, he sparked speculation when he remarked, “After next year I’m out of it. It’s over with after this year. I’m fed up with it.”
“I don’t care about belts. I’m worried about getting my money and getting out of there,” Davis continued. “I just had a boy. I don’t want to have to keep fighting and getting punched and all that.” His concerns highlight a shift in priorities, emphasizing time with family and personal development over the pursuit of accolades.
Questioned about his future plans post-retirement, Davis mentioned aspirations to build a real estate portfolio and distance himself from the spotlight while still generating an income. “I just want to be living without being seen,” he said.
While Davis has achieved world titles in two weight classes—super featherweight and lightweight—he faces criticism for not defining his legacy with significant unification fights against active champions. He has previously faced opponents like Ryan Garcia, but some fans believe the conditions of those matchups have clouded his success.
As Davis prepares for his bout against Roach, boxing analysts and fans will be keenly watching to see how his outlook evolves and whether he will capitalize on upcoming opportunities or follow through with his plans for a break from the ring.
