Giants Coach Daboll’s Firing Reversed After Denver Collapse
East Rutherford, NJ — The New York Giants faced a major decision after their 19-point collapse against the Denver Broncos in Week 7. Reports indicate that head coach Brian Daboll was fired immediately after the game, but ownership later reversed the decision.
WFAN radio host Brian Morash shared details on the station’s afternoon show “Evan and Tiki,” stating that he learned from trusted sources about the initial firing. “Ownership got together and cooler heads prevailed,” Morash explained. This turnaround came after a near calamity within the team following their poor performance.
Morash also noted that the decision to fire Daboll was not led by general manager Joe Schoen. Instead, it seems to have stemmed from higher-ups in the organization. “Making the decision to fire him was not Joe Schoen in that moment, but you could surmise from there … ownership,” Morash said.
Daboll’s position had already been precarious after last season’s disappointing 3-14 finish, prompting owner John Mara to issue a warning about making improvements soon. Morash’s mention of a “split ticket” suggests that the Giants may retain Schoen while letting Daboll go.
Despite the efforts of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, the Giants find themselves at the bottom of the NFC East with a record of 2-7. This puts Daboll’s future in jeopardy unless a drastic turnaround occurs in the second half of the season.
The Giants are scheduled to face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, which could be a decisive game for Daboll’s tenure with the team.
