Blake Sabol San Francisco Giants Catcher

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco Giants made a significant roster move on Sunday, designating catcher/outfielder Blake Sabol for assignment to make room for newly acquired pitcher Justin Verlander. The decision marks the end of Sabol’s tenure with the Giants, at least temporarily, as the team navigates its roster constraints.

Sabol, 27, joined the Giants as a Rule 5 selection in 2023 and spent the entire season on the active roster. However, his role became uncertain under new manager Bob Melvin, whose defensive-first philosophy contrasted sharply with the previous regime led by Gabe Kapler. While Kapler valued offensive potential over defensive prowess, Melvin prioritizes strong defensive play, leaving Sabol in a precarious position.

“Blake’s versatility was an asset under the old system, but the new approach emphasizes defense above all else,” said a team insider. “His offensive struggles this season didn’t help his case.”

In 2024, Sabol hit .236/.301/.394 with 13 home runs in 344 plate appearances, but his defensive limitations behind the plate became a liability. Opposing runners successfully stole bases in all 11 attempts against him in just 65 innings of catching. Despite his struggles, Sabol’s offensive potential and remaining minor league options make him an intriguing option for other teams.

The New York Mets, under president of baseball operations David Stearns, have shown interest in Sabol. The Mets value versatile players who can contribute both behind the plate and in the field. Sabol’s ability to play catcher, left field, and first base aligns with their strategy. “He could provide depth in Syracuse and offer flexibility for Francisco Alvarez at DH,” said a Mets scout.

If Sabol clears waivers, the Giants hope to outright him to AAA Sacramento, where their catching depth is thin. However, his unique skill set and remaining options make him a likely candidate for a waiver claim or trade. “Blake’s a great person and a hard worker,” said a Giants teammate. “Wherever he lands, he’ll give it his all.”
