Matthew Stafford Quarterback Trade News

East Rutherford, N.J. — The New York Giants are reportedly discussing a significant trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford, potentially offering a contract worth $90 to $100 million if the Los Angeles Rams decide to move him this offseason, confirmed by The Post’s Paul Schwartz.

The Giants are eager to bolster their roster as they enter a critical fourth season under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. Discussions around a two-year deal for Stafford would grant the Super Bowl-winning quarterback an average annual salary between $45 million and $50 million, aligning with his reported contract expectations.

According to The Athletic, Stafford is set to have conversations regarding his future with Rams management. The Giants, alongside the Las Vegas Raiders, have emerged as frontrunners for a potential trade. Staff from the Giants have already met with representatives from Stafford’s camp, signaling a serious interest in making the 37-year-old one of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

The Giants hold the third overall pick in the upcoming draft and have the option to select a quarterback, with prospects like Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders considered top contenders. However, analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the overall strength of this draft class, making a trade for an established player like Stafford seem more appealing.

While Stafford would bring a strong arm and experience to the Giants’ offense, concerns about his injury history linger. Nevertheless, the Giants are ready to offer a substantial package, indicating a measure of desperation in their quest for a franchise quarterback.

Despite their interest, the path to acquiring Stafford is fraught with challenges. The Rams must agree to trade him, and NFL Network reported last Friday that their partnership may continue. Stafford is currently slated to earn $27 million this season, a figure that falls short of salaries received by other elite quarterbacks.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Stafford is eligible for a $4 million bonus soon, which adds pressure on the Rams to finalize their decision rapidly. If Stafford becomes available, he would need to choose between the Giants and the Raiders, or the Rams would have to find the Giants’ trade offer more favorable.

The Raiders, despite being in a similar position as the Giants, have gained a new dimension of appeal with the involvement of minority owner Tom Brady. Brady and Stafford were recently seen together in Montana, fostering speculation about a possible partnership in Las Vegas, although the details of their discussions remain unclear.
