Giants’ Jordan Hicks Lands on 15-Day IL with Toe Inflammation

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco Giants pitcher Jordan Hicks has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right great toe, the team announced before Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Bob Melvin revealed that Hicks began feeling discomfort during his last outing on June 1. He faced four batters in that game, walking three of them and showing signs of frustration on the mound.
“You could see him kind of get a little frustrated with the mound,” Melvin said. “He had an MRI today and it showed some inflammation. Therefore, we’ll shut him down here for a little.”
Hicks has struggled this season, recording a 1-5 record with a 6.47 ERA over 13 appearances, including nine starts. His performance has included 43 strikeouts and 20 walks in 48 2/3 innings.
Hayden Birdsong will take Hicks’ spot in the starting rotation. Meanwhile, the Giants have recalled 6-foot-10 right-hander Sean Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento. Hjelle had been impressive in the minor leagues this season, posting a 2.97 ERA over 18 games.
Hjelle, who was a key reliever for the Giants last year, expressed excitement about his return to the majors. “This is my final option year, and I’m ready to make the most of this opportunity,” he said.
In a corresponding move, right-hander Trent Harris was promoted from Double-A Richmond to take Hjelle’s place in Sacramento. Harris has shown strong potential this season, allowing runs in only one of his 13 appearances.
