Giants’ Matt Chapman Lands on Injured List with Hand Injury

DENVER, Colorado — San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained right hand. The move was announced on Tuesday, with the injury stemming from a play during a game against the Atlanta Braves over the weekend.
The injury occurred on Sunday in the eighth inning when Chapman dived back to first base on a pickoff attempt. Following the incident, Chapman appeared to be in pain but continued to play through the discomfort. X-rays taken after the game returned negative, but inflammation persisted, leading to the decision to place him on the injured list.
Chapman, 32, is batting .243 with 12 home runs and 30 RBIs in 65 games this season. He is in his second year with the Giants after signing a $151 million contract that runs through 2030. His recent performance includes a two-run homer in a 3-2 victory against the Braves prior to his injury.
In Chapman’s absence, infielder Casey Schmitt is expected to take over duties at third base. Schmitt will start in Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies. Additionally, the Giants have recalled infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento to bolster the roster. Koss previously played 29 games for the Giants this season, hitting .219 with one home run and eight RBIs.
The Giants are currently on a five-game winning streak, with each game decided by just one run, making the team’s performance even more crucial as they navigate Chapman’s absence.
