Giants Retain Tommy DeVito at Quarterback as Draft Approaches

East Rutherford, New Jersey — The New York Giants have signed quarterback Tommy DeVito to a one-year contract, seeking stability at the pivotal quarterback position ahead of the upcoming NFL draft.
DeVito, who originally joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2023, has been a fan favorite despite a turbulent tenure. After a successful rookie season, where he stepped in for injured starters Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor, he posted a 3-3 record in six games. His performance included 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions across 12 games.
According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, DeVito’s exclusive rights free agent tender amounts to about $1.03 million. With the Giants releasing veteran Daniel Jones, the team looks to strengthen the quarterback position, a priority highlighted by General Manager Joe Schoen.
“Finding our future quarterback is our top priority,” Schoen stated during a recent press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He emphasized the Giants’ intention to explore all potential avenues through free agency and the draft as they approach a critical period of roster building.
The upcoming free agent signing period begins on March 12, leading to the draft, where the Giants hold the third overall pick. Schoen acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding potential quarterback prospects: “There’s no franchise quarterback tree. We want to ensure it’s the right choice; we don’t want to end up in this scenario again if we can avoid it.”
While DeVito remains a stable option, the Giants are under pressure to evaluate their options. With a mixed track record behind center, they are preparing to consider more competition for DeVito once free agency and the draft commence.
Addressing the offensive line’s needs is equally vital. The Giants faced significant struggles last season, largely due to injuries, forcing them to cycle through multiple combinations. Schoen noted that left tackle Andrew Thomas is anticipated to return, alongside established players like Jon Runyan, John Michael Schmitz, and Jermaine Eluemunor. However, the right guard position remains uncertain with starter Greg Van Roten likely to explore free agency.
“Four starters are coming back, and we’ll evaluate what we need to do with the fifth,” Schoen said. “We need our best five on the field and will discuss all options available post-free agency.”
As the free agency period looms, the Giants are set to weigh significant decisions about their roster. With 20 players hitting the unrestricted free agent market and only four retaining exclusive rights, it’s a critical time for lineup adjustments.
The potential for talent acquisition is significant in the current free-agent landscape, with NFL.com listing top players across various positions, including quarterbacks, wide receivers, and edge defenders. This includes high-profile names like Sam Darnold and Davante Adams that could fit into the Giants’ plans.
The overall strategy will be to position themselves favorably for the draft while addressing immediate roster needs, a tightrope the franchise must walk skillfully.
