Detroit, MI — Gleyber Torres and Tommy Kahnle, both instrumental in the New York Yankees‘ World Series run last season, are now thriving with the Detroit Tigers after signing one-year contracts this offseason. As of mid-April 2025, the duo’s contributions have significantly impacted the team’s performance in the AL Central.

Torres, who spent the first seven years of his career in the Bronx, signed a $15 million deal to join the Tigers, while Kahnle agreed to a $7.75 million contract. Their seamless integration into the team has boosted the Tigers’ momentum, currently placing them atop the division standings.

As of this writing, Torres boasts an impressive .323 batting average along with a .379 on-base percentage and .462 slugging percentage, showcasing his offensive prowess alongside his strong defensive skills at second base. “I feel great here in Detroit, and the team has welcomed me with open arms,” Torres said. “I’m just focused on contributing in any way I can.”

Kahnle, now serving as the Tigers’ primary closer, has recorded a stellar 1.29 ERA over six appearances, including three saves. His ability to handle high-pressure situations has drawn praise from teammates and coaches alike. “Having Tommy in the bullpen is a game-changer for us,” manager A.J. Hinch stated. “His experience and poise on the mound are invaluable.”

The Tigers’ general manager, Jeff Greenberg, identified the need to enhance the team’s young roster after narrowly missing the AL Championship Series last season. With New York opting not to re-sign both players, Greenberg seized the opportunity to add two veterans known for their playoff experience on favorable contracts.

Though both Torres and Kahnle are thriving in their new environment, the Yankees seem unperturbed by their departure. New York has transitioned to a new strategy, ensuring they are positioned well within the competitive American League.

The Yankees’ acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the previous season’s trade deadline provided a replacement for Torres, demonstrating the franchise’s forward-thinking approach. Meanwhile, the organization has significantly revamped their bullpen, which also made Kahnle’s release more palatable in the eyes of GM Brian Cashman.

Looking ahead, both teams hope that their respective paths lead to playoff contention, with the potential for a future clash in the postseason. As the season progresses, fans will be eagerly anticipating how their performances continue to unfold.
